Memorising what you do not understand

The practical judgement is to build a simple model of a subject before turning its details into separate prompts. This does not require exhaustive mastery. As a practical check, ask whether you can say what a fact refers to, how it fits the topic and why its distinctions matter. Woźniak and Anki both recommend understanding concepts or learning material in context before memorising labels.12

Experimental evidence strongly supports the underlying role of meaning and context. Across replicated experiments with otherwise difficult prose, explanatory context given before the passage produced better comprehension ratings and recall than the same information supplied afterward.3 A later explanation did not fully repair the initial encoding under those conditions.3

Replicated experiments with undergraduates also compared questions about a word’s physical appearance, sound or meaning before unexpected memory tests. Words processed for meaning were generally retained better than words processed for typography or rhyme.4 Time and effort alone did not explain the result. A difficult shallow task could take longer while producing worse recognition than an easier semantic task.4

Prior knowledge can matter beyond isolated laboratory words. In a longitudinal study of medical students preparing for examinations, growing domain knowledge selectively improved associative memory for knowledge-related face and diagnosis events.5 This is evidence from one population and task, so it should not be treated as a universal estimate.

With a deck and twenty minutes a day, stop when a card contains a label you can repeat but cannot explain. Return briefly to the source, write a plain-language account of the concept, then create prompts for its details. Retain basic cards while allowing the model to become richer as learning continues.

Boundary. The findings for explanatory context and semantic processing are strong. The exact flashcard workflow above is a reasonable procedure built on those findings, not a directly tested sequence. No validated threshold says how much understanding is enough, and the evidence does not show that an incompletely understood fact is impossible to memorise.
