What spaced repetition is bad at

Spaced repetition is bad at serving as a complete substitute for the performance you ultimately need. The major spacing meta-analysis of verbal-recall research was explicitly restricted to verbal tasks. Its strong evidence for remembering words and facts does not by itself establish effects on procedures or workplace performance.1

A separate meta-analysis across varied performance tasks found an overall advantage for spaced over massed practice, but the result depended on task type and interval. Greater task complexity was associated with smaller spacing effects, and some combinations produced no advantage or a reversal.2 The practical response is not to abandon spacing. It is to stop asking a cue-and-answer system to rehearse every part of a complex activity.

With twenty minutes, a learner preparing for a physical examination might review key terms and decision points, then spend part of the session performing or explaining the complete examination. A professional learning diagnosis might retrieve defining features, then work through cases that require choosing and defending a conclusion.

Erroneous retrieval is a possible risk, but whether this finding applies to ordinary spaced-repetition software has not been directly tested.4 In two misinformation experiments, repeatedly retrieving an incorrect detail made that detail more likely to be recalled as part of the original event two days later.4 A meta-analysis also found that practising selected material could harm later memory for related unpractised material, although this was not a direct test of ordinary spaced-repetition software.3

Boundary. The evidence does not support saying that spaced repetition is ineffective for every complex skill. It supports a narrower judgement: effects become more task-dependent as performance grows more complex, and cards do not directly rehearse every cue, action, or consequence of real performance.
